This is the elective course on Management in the Health Sector.
To get an understanding of the particularities of the heaelth sector and its different elements. Apply learnt management tools to this specific sector. In order to do this we will use case studies, exercises, conferences and will have some visitors.
To reach the course objectives most effectively, you will need to:
In order to assist you in the case preparation, most cases have a short description and a number of discussion questions. These assignment questions are primarily intended to clear out some points on the case and to give you a direction for its discussion, but your understanding of the matter will only increase if you then continue the analysis on the managerial level and finally come to a good solution of the problem(s) presented in the case.
There will be three major elements to formally evaluate your performance:
The case method is used throughout the course. During class sessions, we will ask one or more class members to start the session by addressing a specific question. Anyone who has prepared the case should be able to handle such assignment. After a few minutes, the discussion will be open to the rest of the class. You are expected to be an active participant and contribute to the quality of the discussion. You are not expected to have the right answer, but a thoughtful one. Class participation will be evaluated using the following criteria: (1) relevance of the points made, (2) flow with other comments already made in class, (3) understanding and analysis of the case, (4) willingness to contribute.
The weight for each element of evaluation is as follows :

As additional feedback, it is always possible to make an appointment with us to sit down and discuss any problems you encounter during the course. Please note that our information about how you are doing in the class is much more limited than the one you have yourself, and this is especially true if you are not the most talkative person in the class.
You are asked to elaborate a report on a subject related to health sector management. The topic could be a exploring in more depth a subject we have seen / we will see in class or any other related issue. You would chose it because you think it is relevant for your future professional activity, because you know it well and want to apply class concepts to it, or you simply find it inteteresting or like it! - We can help you in selecting the topic and provide initial readings and references. The report will be published on the internet web page of the course. - The report team can include two students. The length of the report would be 4000-5000 words (about 10 pages) and can include graphics and tables.

The course requires preparation. We will be prepared for every class and expect you to do the same. Because we frequently call on individuals whose hands are not raised, you should let us know in advance if you do not wish to be called on or if you must miss a class.
We will use this internet page, http://web.iese.edu/health/ (Note that it starts with "web", NOT "www") as the main communication system throughout the course.
Please, visit this page frequently, as it will be updated very often. Remember that "everything you need to know is on the internet. Usually, you just can't find it"
Comments on the course are welcome!
